Austin’s Vegan Tri-Athlete Leading A PlantStrong Revolution

Rip Esselstyn, one of Austin’s winningest triathletes, has a secret to his athletic success. And it doesn’t involve steroids or any other illicit substances.  His secret is legally pure and simple and can be found at your local grocery store: Whole, PlantStrong Food!

Says Rip:

It’s right there, in the produce section, where you’ll find Nature’s naturally lean, bad-ass performance enhancers: plant foods such as whole grains, vegetables, fruits, legumes, seeds, and nuts. Instead of injecting themselves with human growth hormones and steroids and having those monsters coursing through their 65,000 miles of veins, arteries, and capillaries, athletes can consume plant-powered foods to fill their system with vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, and antioxidants.  They’ll not only be on their way to MVP seasons but also to the best health of their lifetimes.
Numerous studies indicate most western diseases including heart disease, diabetes, cancer and obesity can be reversed with a plant-based diet.  President Clinton, previously known for his fast food habit, recently announced that he was influenced to change his diet after reading the research of Dr. T. Colin Campbell, author of The China Study and Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn (Rip’s father), a gold-medal winner at the 1956 Olympics and author of Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease.

And it’s not just doctors who endorse this message.  More and more outstanding athletes are showing people there’s a better way. These men and women include Mac Danzig, mixed martial arts fighter; Tony Gonzales, record-setting tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs; Salim Stoudamire, plant-eating guard for the NBA Atlanta Hawks; Martina Navratilova, the world’s winningest tennis player; and Rip’s personal hero, Dave Scott, six-time winner of the hardest endurance race on the planet, the Hawaii Iron Man triathlon.

Rip has been a passionate spokesperson about the benefits of his diet for over 20 years.  While fighting fires with Austin’s Engine 2, he convinced his fellow firemen to adopt his plant-based diet after a bet between them on who had the lowest cholesterol turned up the news that one of them had a score of over 350!

Their collective choice to come together in solidarity and support their friend at risk for a heart attack any day, led to news coverage around the country and eventually the New York Times best-selling book, The Engine 2 Diet which caught the attention of Whole Foods Market.

Now backed by Whole Foods as one of their Healthy Eating Partners, Rip is sharing his “Get PlantStrong” message with a national audience.
